The Rev. Michaelene Melko Haysler, 57, of North Vernon, Indiana, passed away at 11:40 p.m. on Thursday, June 11, 2009, at Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility in Columbus, Indiana.
Rev. Michaelene Haysler was born September 20, 1952, and was raised in the small steel-manufacturing town of Mingo Junction, Ohio. She attended St. Agnes Elementary School, then, in 1970, she graduated as Valedictorian from Steubenville Central High School in Steubenville, Ohio. In 1974, she received her Bachelor's Degree in Religious Studies from Ohio Dominican College in Columbus, Ohio. She later returned to her home church of St. Agnes in Mingo Junction to marry George C. Haysler Jr. on October 22, 1977. During the years, she held jobs as director and educator at various churches and schools in Columbus, Ohio; Washington, DC; Silver Spring, Maryland; Tallmadge, Ohio; Huntington, Indiana; and Butlerville, Indiana. She also had and raised three children. When they had grown older, she returned to work as an Associate at Wal-Mart in North Vernon, Indiana. She eventually decided to pursue a late-life career as a preaching minister. To this end, in 2007, she received her Master of Divinity degree from Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, Kentucky. In the same year, she was commissioned as a Provisional Elder in the South Indiana Conference of the United Methodist Church. During her seminary and career years, she served as pastor in a number of Indiana United Methodist churches including Butlerville, Rush Branch, Dupont, Ebenezer, and Brownstown. Rev. Michaelene Haysler was a member of the Catholic Slovak Ladies Union in Cleveland, Ohio, and a member of the Brownstown, Indiana, Ministerial Association. She enjoyed oil painting, art, playing guitar, crafts, and gardening. She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Andrew David Haysler, in 1993; and one brother, Stephen Melko. Survivors include her husband, Rev. George C. Haysler, Jr.; one son, George Michael (Becky) Haysler of North Vernon; one daughter, Cecilia Haysler of North Vernon; two brothers, Paul (Anne) Melko of Delaware, Ohio, and Joe (Mary) Melko of Bridgeport, West Virginia; one sister, Michaela Melko of Manitowoc, Wisconsin; and one granddaughter, Breanna Haysler of North Vernon. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 16, 2009, at the Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home in North Vernon, Indiana, with the Reverends John L. Adams and Bessie Adams officiating. Friends may call at the Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home on Monday, June 15, 2009, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday. Burial will be in the Union Cemetery in Huntington, Indiana.
