Gladys L. Gunderson died at home on Monday, June 8, 2009. She was born January 26, 1927 in Jennings County, Indiana, the daughter of Bertha Jane Curran and Oliver Morton Robbins. She married Romeo Jones on November 22, 1944, in North Vernon, Indiana. They later divorced. She married Donald Lee Gunderson on February 19, 1952, in Jacksonville, Illinois. They later divorced.

Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Larry Dale Jones, a daughter, Jean Ann Gunderson, sisters Margaret and Viola Robbins, brothers Leo, Leon, Kenneth, Curtis and Louie Robbins and son-in-law Mark West.

She is survived by her children, Raymond "Rick" Jones (companion Nancy Settles) of Jacksonville, Donna Bragg (companion Jim Grubbs) and Kathy Gunderson of Springfield, Mary Jane (husband Jerry) Young of Indianapolis and Patty West of Dawson. Grandchildren Cheryl Benson, Kristin (husband Keith) Klasing, Brett McCallister, Jessica West (fiancé James Kollins), Matthew West, Jacob Young (fiancée Jessica Hammer), Sara Young and Renee (husband Eddie) Brewer. She was known as beloved "Grandma Chippy" to her great-grandchildren Sydney, Sierra, Breanna, Christina, Erin, Summer, and Izzah. Also surviving are her brother Edgar (wife Ruth Ann) Robbins of Phoenix, several nephews, nieces, sisters-in law and cousins.

Gladys always valued education. She never stopped learning and was an avid reader until her death. She was employed as a Mental Health Technician for the Illinois Department of Mental Health. After receiving her Associate Degree in Nursing in 1974, she worked as a Registered Nurse at the Andrew McFarland Zone Center until her retirement in December 1991.

As the family genealogist, Gladys researched and documented her Robbins family line back to Wales in 1650. That history is in the collection at the Jennings County Library in North Vernon, Indiana.

In her retirement, Gladys enjoyed travel, needlework, cooking and bargain hunting at garage sales and thrift shops. Her greatest passion, however, was taking care of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They were the center of her world and she was the center of theirs.

To honor their mother, the family has established a nursing scholarship at Lincoln Land Community College. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Gladys' name to the LLCC Foundation. Donations may also be made to the "Friends of Baldwin Cemetery", the family cemetery association.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday, June 15, 2009 at Staab Funeral Home, with funeral service at 6 p.m., Monsignor John Ossola officiating. Visitation will also be held on Saturday, June 20, 2009 at 12:30 p.m. with memorial service at 1:00 p.m. at Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home, North Vernon, Indiana, with interment at Baldwin Cemetery, Vernon, Indiana.
