Charles Christopher Welker, Jr.

Charles Christopher Welker, Jr., 72, of North Vernon, Indiana passed away at 4:40 p.m. on Monday, October 12, 2009, at Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility in Columbus, Indiana.

Chris was born on November 4, 1936 in Detroit Michigan the son of Charles Welker, Sr. and Sylvia Anders. He married his first wife, Sharon Sullivan Welker on February 17, 1968. She preceded him in death on March 24, 1996. He married his second wife, Bonnie Disbro Welker on October 25, 1997 at the Vernon Baptist Church in Vernon, Indiana. She survives

Chris retired as a Sergeant Major after 30 years of serving in the United States Army Band "Pershing Own". He was a 1954 graduate of Lakeworth High School in Lakeworth, Florida and a 1958 graduate of Florida State University. He was a member of the Florida State University Alumni, United States Army Band Alumni and a former member of the Columbus City Band. He enjoyed listening to music, ice hockey, Florida State Football, NASCAR and World War II history.

Surviving with his wife is four sons, Willis E. Hershey, Jr. and his wife Sheila of Bluemont, Virginia, Kevin P. Hershey, Sr., and Christopher Hershey both of Nokesville, Virginia, and Joseph Lovins of Dillsboro, Indiana; one daughter, Kathleen Dunham and her husband Alan of Sterling, Virginia; ten grandchildren, Kevin P. Hershey, Jr. and his wife Amber of Ashburn, Virginia, Jason Dunham and his wife Wendy and Ryan Dunham both of Sterling, Virginia, Joshua Dunham of Arlington, Virginia, Shaun Hershey and fiancé Sarah and Kelly Hershey both of Cleveland, Ohio, Phillip Lovins and his wife Marjorie of Ft. Polk, Louisiana, Marie Moore of Versailles, Indiana, Dylan Lovins of Cross Plains, Indiana and Amanda Selby and her husband Winfred of, North Vernon, Indiana; four great-grandchildren, Landon and Jackson Hershey both of Ashburn, Virginia, Trevor and Melody Selby both of North Vernon, Indiana; two nephews Mark Welker, Sr. and Robert Welker.

He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Sharon Sullivan Welker, one daughter, Teresa Lovins and a brother, Richard Welker.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 15, 2009, at the Dove Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home in North Vernon, Indiana with Bob Barber officiating. Friends may call on Wednesday, October 14, 2009 from 4:00p.m. until 8:00 p.m., and one hour prior to service on Thursday at the Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Vernon Cemetery in Vernon, Indiana with members of the New Albany National Guard giving Military graveside rites.

Memorials may be made through the Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home to the American Cancer Society and The Salvation Army.
