Richard Houze Updike, 78, of North Vernon, Indiana passed away at 1:30 a.m. on Friday, December 25, 2009 at his residence.

Mr. Updike was born on May 21, 1931 in Westport, Indiana, the son of the late Floyd Updike Sr. and Mary Houze Updike. He married Mary Jo O'Neal on June 25, 1955 in Clarksville, Indiana. She survives.

Mr. Updike retired in 1995 after 35 years with Cummins Engine Company in Columbus, Indiana where he worked as a machinist. He was a member of Tea Creek Baptist Church in Lovett, Indiana, he had been a member of the Masonic Lodge for 57 years joining the Alert Masonic Lodge in Alert, Indiana which consolidated with the Elizabethtown Masonic Lodge, and then moving his membership to the North Vernon Masonic Lodge. He was a graduate of Jackson High School in Decatur County, Indiana. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War. His hobbies included gardening, bird watching, being outdoors and spending time with his family.

Surviving with his wife are four sons, Darryl R., Mark N., Jon Michael and Tommy (Tina) Updike all of North Vernon, Indiana; one daughter, Jo Ellen Updike of North Vernon, Indiana; four grandchildren, Chelsea L. Updike of Columbus, Indiana, Ryan W., Jacob N., and Joshua M. Updike all of North Vernon, Indiana; one great-grandchild, Adelynn M. Shinolt of Columbus, Indiana.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Floyd Updike, Jr.

Funeral Service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at the Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home with the Rev. Brian Anderson officiating. Friends may call at the Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home on Monday, December 28, 2009 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday. Members of North Vernon Masonic Lodge #59 F.&A.M. will conduct a Masonic Service at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. Burial will be in the Tea Creek Baptist Cemetery in Lovett, Indiana.

Memorials may be made through the Dove-Sharp & Rudicel Funeral Home to Hospice of Jennings County.
